To some extent, some success has been lately achieved on the city level, taking as example Green list which won a number of councillor seats in Zagreb districts and in the City Parliaments in other smaller cities in Croatia. However, in accordance to the survey commissioned by HBS to GFK Centre for market research, potential interest for the green politics is few times bigger than one indicated in election results. Consequently, among other program areas, it is intention of the HBF in Croatia to build up the green discourse in public and to spread green ideas through different activities.
In our daily work we aim to support already existing civic and political groups, initiatives and parties that act in compliance with green values; to provide room for their actions, more visibility, influence or capacity building that can be of use in their better profilation and every day work with potential members and voters.
We recognize high potential of civil society actions for green politics and encourage initiatives that aim to translate civic activism into forms of more direct and actions. Apart from that, in some cases we cooperate with members of already established political parties when they pay attention for issues which are extremely relevant for our work (environmental protection, energy policy, anti-discrimination policy, LGBT rights…)
Although historically green political idea is more close to the left spectrum, we consider green political option as the progressive political grouping that transcends ideological differences and aims to develop, provide and apply solutions to global issues as climate change, EU enlargement, natural resource management, social justice and public participation.
When acting, we use different forms; we organize consultation meetings, public discussions, study visits, workshops and seminars; we prepare and write studies and discussion papers. Particularly important and vital for the development of the green political option is regional and transnational political networking with the political counterparts in Germany, Austria, Holland and Sweden; resulting with strengthening of dialogue with similar parties Europe wide.
